About SHARE: The SHARE Foundation: Building a New El Salvador Today, a non-profit organization, supports grassroots communities in El Salvador in constructing sustainable solutions to poverty, underdevelopment and social injustice. SHARE has worked for over 25 years to help build economic justice and democracy in El Salvador through grants, technical assistance and advocacy accompaniment. SHARE is launching a new 5 - year strategic plan, which will set direction of the institution for another 25 years of solidarity.

COMMUNICATION AND DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

The SHARE Foundation: Building a New El Salvador Today, a non-profit organization, supports grassroots communities in El Salvador in constructing sustainable solutions to poverty, underdevelopment and social injustice. SHARE has worked for over 27 years to help build economic justice and democracy in El Salvador with a priority on rural women through economic development projects, advocacy and cross border solidarity. SHARE supports initiatives focusing on issues of environmental justice, food sovereignty and fair trade.

SHARE promotes people-to-people accompaniment through delegations to El Salvador. SHARE is sponsoring an Electoral Observer Mission to monitor the Salvadoran Presidential Elections in March 2009.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for tracking, cultivating, renewing and upgrading current major donors, through diversified strategies of personal visits, phone calls, written correspondence, delegations to El Salvador and donor events.
  • Responsible for prospecting new donors through similar strategies.
  • Develops capacity of Board members and other SHARE volunteers to participate actively in fundraising.
  • Develops and implements all website strategy as it relates to donors.

Qualifications:

  • Experience and desire to advance nonprofit fundraising.
  • Experience with computer networks, Microsoft Office applications and fundraising software.
  • Desire to advance fundraising in the internet.
  • Knowledge of political, social and economic conditions in El Salvador/Central America.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English, preferred.

SOLIDARITY AND EDUCATION COORDINATOR

SHARE is seeking to fill its El Salvador Office position of Grassroots Solidarity Education Coordinator for our Grassroots Program. This position is jointly supported by the Volunteer Missionary Movement (VMM), and therefore requires a commitment to the VMM mission, as well as participation in VMM orientation, retreats and other activities (please visit www.vmmusa.org to learn more before submitting your application).

Job Description:

The Grassroots Solidarity Education Coordinator uses a liberation theology-based perspective to provide U.S. citizens with contextual education opportunities regarding community-based efforts in El Salvador for sustainable development and justice. This position coordinates and facilitates first-hand delegation experiences in El Salvador for SHARE’s general delegations and theological school delegations, works with US staff to develop and grow our Theological School Consortium, maintains contacts for theological delegations in El Salvador, supports the Delegation and Tour Coordinator with facilitating sistering and youth delegations, works with Program Officers and Fundraising team to gather and write up personal stories and promotional materials for SHARE projects and our work in El Salvador in general and produces educational materials related to SHARE’s annual thematic focus and delegations.

Responsibilities:

  • Organize and lead two large (approx. 40-100 people) delegations per year. SHARE organizes general delegations for important historical memory events (Anniversary of the assassination of Monseñor Romero, 4 US Churchwomen, etc) or to accompany the Salvadoran people at crucial moments in their history (eg. 2009 elections). (25%)
    • Participate in the creation of promotional materials
    • Work with delegation planning team on pre-delegation preparation
    • Design and set up itinerary in coordination with other SHARE staff
    • Coordinate all logistics of the delegation
    • Coordinate team of delegation leaders to ensure the smooth running of the delegation.
    • Act as point person during the delegation
  • Assist in solidifying SHARE’s Theological School Consortium which promotes contextual education that introduces theology students to the legacy of Archbishop Romero and other people of faith who struggled for social justice in El Salvador. (25%)
    • Maintain relationships with Salvadoran churches, religious leaders and other contacts for theological school delegations.
    • Identify/design contextual education activities for theological delegations
    • Coordinate all aspects of theological school delegations (pre-delegation communication, itinerary design and set up, logistics, interpretation, reflection, etc.)
  • Support the Delegation and Tour Coordinator in coordinating and leading sistering and youth delegations. (20%)
  • Accompany SHARE counterparts working with marginalized Salvadoran communities to gather testimonies which personalize the struggle for justice in El Salvador and the work that SHARE supports. Write up promotional pieces to be posted to our website, electronic news bulletin, blog and for fundraising campaigns. (20%)
  • Support the production of SHARE’s annual theme and other promotional materials. (5%)
  • Participate as a member of the Grassroots and El Salvador Office team and assume administrative tasks as needed (5%)

Skills and Experience needed:

  • Bilingual. Ability to interpret Spanish-English and English-Spanish.
  • Commitment to mission and vision of SHARE, the spirit and lifestyle of VMM, and demonstrated commitment to struggles for social and economic justice.
  • Willingness to fundraise for VMM, before, during and after commitment.
  • International and cross-cultural experience highly preferred.
  • Experience and commitment with communities of faith. Theological studies a plus.
  • Experience and interest in working with groups of varied backgrounds and ages.
  • Event planning and organizing experience (ability to plan, organize, and execute events).
  • Critical awareness and capacity for political and program analysis.
  • Willingness to travel to and spend the night in rural communities.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to take initiative; work independently and on a team.
  • Flexibility, ability to adapt to a fast pace.
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Two year commitment
  • VMM currently requires that applicants be a citizen or permanent resident ofthe US or Canada.

Compensation: Stipend, vacation, and health benefits. VMM pays for air transportation at the beginning of assignment and back to US at the end, and provides a resettlement fund for return to the US/Canada upon successful completion of commitment.

GRASSROOTS EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY INTERN

Role of Interns:

1. Research human rights and development issue/s affecting SHARE partners in El Salvador, i.e., Central American Free Trade Agreement, Plan Puebla Panama, sociopolitical violence, etc.

2. Attend and report on NGO coalition and community based meetings as a SHARE representative.

3. Participate in the implementation of SHARE's grassroots educational campaign by researching and writing education and advocacy alerts, doing presentations, etc.

4. Support SHARE’s advocacy efforts directed at Congress, U.S. government agencies and multi-lateral financial institutions.

5. Assist with administrative and logistical tasks for advocacy and grassroots projects.

Though not a pre-requisite, the following background and skills would be helpful:

  • Work in Latin America (course work or volunteer work) Acivism in human rights, peace and justice causes
  • Excellent organizational, communication and writing skills
  • Knowledge of Spanish (ability to translate is particularly helpful)
  • Editing and website design
  • Knowledge of organizing with faith communities

All of our Washington, DC internships are unpaid. During the fall and spring, interns are expected to work at least 16 hours each week. During the summer, they work 24 hours each week. Approximately 30% of the internship is administrative in nature. The remainder of an intern's time is spent working with staff on specific projects. A staff member and the intern will design a project based on SHARE’s needs and theintern’s interests.
